HARRISBURG, PA - 05.01.08// The Innovation Transfer Network (ITN), a partnership among 13 institutions of higher education in Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster and Lebanon counties, provides business assistance, technology assessment, and this year a total of $127,000 in seed funding for technology transfer activities. Specifically, the seed grants provide up to $10,000 to educational institutions to encourage further development of projects that are close to commercialization. The process is competitive and preference is given to those projects that involve a private sector partner. This year the program received the most applications of any year, and 12 of the 14 projects chosen for funding had private sector relationships.
The seed assistance grants were funded through a Keystone Innovation Grant (KIG). The Keystone Innovation Grant (KIG) program is a joint effort of the Lancaster Keystone Innovation Zone (KIZ), administered by the James Street Improvement District (JSID), the Harrisburg Market KIZ, administered by Capital Region Economic Development Corporation (CREDC) and a collaboration of thirteen higher education institutions. Both the KIG and KIZ initiatives are overseen by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (PA DCED). In early 2006, PA DCED awarded Keystone Innovation Grant funds to Franklin & Marshall College and to Penn State Harrisburg to support the regional collaboration of Central Pennsylvania’s higher education institutions.
A portion of the KIG funds were used to create the Innovation Transfer Network (www.innovationtransfernetwork.org), which serves as the regional collaborative linking higher education institutions, economic development organizations and private sector business. The Innovation Transfer Network administered the grant application and review processes for this year’s Seed Assistance Grant fund.
