The Penn State Poll is a telephone survey (landline sample with a cell phone supplement) of 600 adult Pennsylvanians conducted by the Center for Survey Research at Penn State Harrisburg. The Poll is designed to allow organizations and researchers to contribute customized questions to the survey while sharing fixed survey costs with other sponsors. The data collected are the property of the sponsoring organization and are not shared with other sponsors or made publicly available without the express permission of the sponsoring organization. Sponsors of past Penn State Polls have used the results of the survey to track public policy issues, inform decision-making and policymaking, assess Pennsylvanians’ knowledge of or opinions about specific topics, perform benchmarking, conduct academic research, and measure satisfaction with organizational services and performance. HistoriQuest LLC created and ran an educational Civil War “alternate reality” game hosted by the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA. The game, titled “The Jewel of the Valleys,” ran the length of a fundraiser in which the brave museum curator, Brett Kelley, again chose to live the life of a Civil War soldier for two weeks. Brett traveled as a Confederate soldier by foot from Fredericksburg, VA to Harrisburg. The game kicked off with a “QR code” and web address being sent to educators and students around the country. The Jewel of the Valleys website and the Jewel of the Valleys Wiki detailed a dark and mysterious puzzle to be solved through the use of Civil War era communication technologies and authentic Civil War documents in the Museum’s archives. Students from around the country worked collaboratively and on their own to follow the mystery. The ultimate objective of the game wass to solve the mystery of “The Jewel of the Valleys.” The winner(s) of the game were announced as Brett reached the end of his journey- the Civil War Museum in Harrisburg.

HistoriQuest LLC and Harrisburg University of Science and Technology are partnering on an original and exciting project intended to facilitate the introduction of games in K12 education. The upcoming website, SubMerge: Deeper Thinking about Games and Education, would fill a need for academic discussion of the direct association of specific games to specific K12 learning objectives, individual learning styles, 21st Century Skills, Common Core Curriculum, and the LoTi HEAT Framework. Secondly, the site would support the proliferation of content-specific games, but more importantly to argue that the higher reaches of Bloom’s Taxonomy, the HEAT Framework, and 21st Century skills are most often best attained by students using non-content specific games. It is these games that offer chances for deep mental processing, player choice, creativity and innovation. The project is generously funded by the Ludus Project.
