To say Malathy Nair trusted her abilities is an understatement. More like she found it inconceivable to question them.

Right around the time her mother was in the hospital for a heart attack, Nair got an idea for a business. With her own children to raise and knowing she would soon have to care for her ailing mother, she quit her job as a scientist for a large food manufacturer and took up office space in the Hershey Center for Applied Research.

**Event Rescheduled** Plug Into the Life Sciences Sector

The ITN Event entitled "Plug Into the Life Sciences Sector" originally scheduled to take place on Thursday, February 25, 2010, at Lancaster General Hospital has been rescheduled and will now be held on Monday, April 19, 2010.

Those individuals who originally registered to attend on February 25th are asked to confirm their attendance on April 19th by sending an email with their name, email address, company name and telephone number to itnwk@psu.edu.

   

Dr. Webster Awarded Over $200K to Accelerate ITN-Funded Simulation Project

Dr. Roger Webster of Millersville University and Dr. Joseph Sassani of the Penn State College of Medicine have been awarded a $213,550.00 grant from Department of Defense for development of an "Ocular Trauma MicroSurgical Simulator". This builds on earlier work, simulating cataract surgery, which was funded by an ITN Seed Assistance Grant.

A 2005 study by the National Association of College and University Business Officers revealed Pennsylvania's independent institutions of higher learning produce an economic impact of $18.4 billion statewide. Another study a year later by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education found its 14 member public schools contribute $4.47 billion to the Commonwealth annually. Also in 2006, the University of Pennsylvania, the iconic Ivy League institution, claimed $9.6 billion in annual economic impact alone throughout the state.
